A journey into the history of Johannesburg — by suburb, building, and era. This research led to a book, “Johannesburg Then and Now”, published by Penguin Random House in 2018.
Johannesburg1912 is the name of my historical blog on Johannesburg.
It started out after seeing the original hand drawn plans from 1912 for our house when building an extra room on in 2010. I had this mad idea that I could find a picture of the house from back then and started buying up 2nd hand books on Johannesburg. This led to the discovery of the rich and amazing history of the town (now city) and a mission to document those buildings and houses still standing (and comparing them to old pictures I found).
All this led to a blog site documenting the history of Johannesburg by suburb and theme (trams, theatres and churches). This turned into a book deal with Penguin Random House for a book called ‘Johannesburg Then and Now’ which was released in October 2018.
