Sharon Tandy’s Birthday
*Update: Heard the sad new today (23 March 2015) that Sharon Tandy passed away over the weekend after a long illness. Condolences to Wendy Crabb and her family*
REFORM! party playlist favourite Sharon Tandy turns 70 today (18 September).
The South African singer (born Sharon Finkelstein) achieved success in the UK on the 60s and was one of the few white woman to record at the legendary STAX studios where she was backed by Booker T & the MGs and Isaac Hayes. For me, she sits alongside Dusty Springfield and The Supremes.
The selection available on iTunes currently doesn’t do her justice. Some of my favourite tracks come off the Ace Records release called ‘You gotta believe it’s” which is a selection of her 60s output. On there are “One way street” and “You gotta believe”.
Try these though, for a good introduction:
Gotta get enough time (with Les Fluer De Lys)
She also had 3 top 10 hits in South Africa in the 70s and starred as a singer in the boxing film Brutal Glory in 1989. Sharon now lives in the UK.
A ‘six degrees of separation’ moment: Sharon Tandy turned out to be the mother of a friend and fellow music industry colleague’s wife!
